Will one-way changes hit Easter weekend?

An announcement that the long-awaited tweaks to Welshpool’s controversial one-way system will begin in April has been largely welcomed in the town.

But there are concerns that the work could continue over the Easter weekend, traditionally the busiest period of the year for traffic heading through the town.

Ken Skates, Minister responsible at the Welsh Government, confirmed when the work will begin to Welshpool Town Council who have championed pubic engagement in finalising the work that will be required.

“The Town Council along with the County Councillors for Welshpool have been in discussions with the Welsh Government and Powys County Council to try and achieve the best result for Welshpool,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson.

“We welcome this decision but will now work closely with the officers of both Welsh Government and Powys County Council to ensure that the introduction programme of works take into account the Easter Weekend in the middle of April.”

Since its introduction in 2011, the one-way system has courted plenty of controversy and a widespread public consultation last year drew plenty of responses and suggestions. The final plan of works has been solidly backed by both residents and town planners as a more suitable and safer road system.
