Protest march against Welshpool Library move

19/03/2019 @ 10:33

Protesters are continuing their major effort to stop Welshpool Library from closing down and moving in with the Powysland Museum.

With work due to start on the move next month, a group of supporters are planning a march on March 30 to enable people to show Powys County Council that they feel the decision is wrong.

PCC want to move the library so that staff can move in from their Neuadd Maldwyn building which is being sold off to save money.

But the decision has been met by a wave of protest with more than 4,000 people signing a petition and 100 people attending a public meeting last week.

The outcome from the meeting was to organise a march from the library on March 30, leaving at 11am, and finishing at Powysland Museum.

“We want to spread the word and provide an opportunity for people to show what the library means to them,” said a spokesperson for the Save Welshpool Library Facebook page. “Please bring banners and flags so we can send a strong message that this is the wrong decision for the town and its surrounding communities.”

Organisers say they are liaising with police to ensure that it is a safe march through the town.
