Fundraising page launched ahead of library march Saturday

A rallying call has gone out to local people wanting to reverse the unpopular decision to downsize Welshpool Library to join a protest march on Saturday.

And in a bid to continue the fight to stop the facility moving in with Powysland Museum, a campaign fundraising page has also been launched.

Those wanting to support are being invited to congregate at the library from 10.30am, with the march starting at 11am and heading through the town towards the museum.

Campaigners are also trying to raise £1,000 to cover some costs for continuing the fight.

Powys County Council says the library must move to make way for staff coming in from their offices at Neuadd Maldwyn, which will be sold off. However, more than 4,000 people have signed a petition opposing the move.

“This move will detrimentally compromise both services (library and museum) as there will be significantly less space for each,” reads a campaign statement on their Just Giving page which can be accessed here.

“Less space will affect the number of books, DVDs and computers that will be available in the library; limit the services they offer to schools and some of the most vulnerable people in our community; plus, it will restrict access for young families with buggies and there will be less accessible parking available.

“The museum holds many artefacts that are of great importance to the local area and beyond. Their fantastic workshops for families and school children are already being affected and they will have to limit the number of exhibitions that they put on, which attract people to the town.”
