A Welshpool-based charity that promotes positive mental health and implements the five ways to well-being has won big on the National Lottery.

The Ponthafren Association has been awarded £498,921 by the National Lottery Community Fund to deliver the Ponthafren Empowering, Inspiring, Education project which will build on learning from the current programme of counselling and one-to-one recovery by enhancing its new pathway approach.

The project will support between 1,200-1,425 people with mental health issues, and 40 volunteers will gain confidence and skills in the areas of Welshpool, Newtown and Llanidloes, where a new space will also be created as a result of the funding.

The award is one of four announced for Montgomeryshire, with the Caersws Recreation Association (£86,000) and Llansilin Playing Fields Association (£31,888) receiving funds to upgrade run down and outdated playgrounds.

Berriew Preschool and Toddler Group will run an intergenerational project with the children and a group of residents at a local care home, with its £2,070 grant funding minibus costs, IT equipment, musical instruments, balloons and bubbles and refreshments.

The news has been welcomed by local Assembly Member Russell George who said: “It is positive news to see four projects in Montgomeryshire awarded substantial grants from The National Lottery Community Fund.

“I know much hard work has gone into submitting the applications, and I would like to pass on my own thanks to the many volunteers within these organisations who have put in such effort.

“The Ponthafren Association do fantastic work in Newtown and Welshpool, and I’m delighted that their work will now be extended to deliver services in Llanidloes.”

Ponthafren sees an average of 78 people walk through its door every day and an average of 272 members benefit from the services.

The charity delivers nearly 2000 hours of groups and courses for its members during the year, including accredited courses through Adult Learning Wales for members to learn new skills and abilities.
