‘Meet Tommy Atkins’ tonight

31/05/2019 @ 10:09

A moving performance showcasing horror, pain, misery, boredom and even the moments of joy in the trenches of World War I will be held tonight (Friday) at the Church House, Welshpool.

Meet Tommy Atkins takes us back to August 4, 1914, with the declaration of war between Britain and Germany, when reservist Tommy Atkins is immediately called up to serve his country.

Within weeks, he sees his first action in the fields of France and subsequently experiences the full scale of life in the Western Front trenches of the First World War.

Starring actor Peter Gill who wrote the play in 2014 to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI, Meet Tommy Atkins takes Tommy through the inter-war period when many of those that had fought in the war returned to a country that was definitely not a country fit for heroes, and then past a second world war and into an era when social benefits were introduced.

The performance starts at 7.30pm, with tickets £10, £5 (children) to include programme, nibbles and hot drinks. Patrons are allowed to bring their own wine. Tickets available on the door.
