Flood operation continues into second day

The operation to rid the Town Hall area of flood water is continuing into a second day after fire fighters worked through the night to pump rising waters from a number of properties.

Fire fighters started their operation at about 10.30am on Tuesday by pumping water from the basement of the Town Hall, with a number of properties nearby also affected as water continued to pour in from an unknown source.

Severn Trent engineers have also been on site to identify the cause, but with more heavy rain forecasted there could be some way to go until a solution is found.

Town Council staff have also been on site to provide support to the fire crews from Welshpool, Llanfair Caereinion, Newtown and Montgomery, while the community has also come out with supplies to keep the workers going.

“A big thanks to the Fire Brigade, Street Scene Lads (Paul and Phil in particular), the guys from Metrorod, and Julie from the Tuck Box who kept the Fire Brigade refreshed all night, and the two lads from Powys who came for a while late evening,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, who added that some sewerage had also leaked into the area.

The full extent of the damage will not be known until the water has gone, but the Town Hall boilers have been isolated to avoid problems.
