Armed robbers still at large

15/04/2011 @ 05:35

They were two crimes that shocked Montgomeryshire at the end of last year.

Armed robberies, just a few weeks apart, terrorised the county in their brutality with one of them failing after the owner of a Welshpool jewellers fought them off, but the second landed a big haul of cash from a Newtown Building Society.

It sparked a massive manhunt with appeals for information through both mywelshpool and mynewtown but the culprits are still on the run.

Last night a police insider confirmed: “At the moment there are no updates to report.”

The robberies are not believed to be connected.

So, four months on, mywelshpool and mynewtown have teamed up to remind you of the incidents with the hope that it will refresh your memory.

Welshpool jewellers

Date: December 1, 2010

Just before 5pm, masked men wielding baseball bats raided the jewellers on Church Street before its owner bravely fought them off despite being sprayed in the face with some sort of gas. The raiders fled and police believe one of them would have suffered facial injuries from the fight.

Nationwide Newtown

Date: December 20, 2010

Robbers armed with sledge hammers barged their way into the town centre Nationwide and beat the guards before making off with a “substantial” amount of cash. The incident happened around 10pm when money was being delivered to the branch.
