Later ‘train’ from Shrewsbury tonight!

13/07/2019 @ 08:48

It’s good news for revellers heading to the Let's Rock Shrewsbury festival today, but potentially bad news for Welshpool’s pubs in the long run as Transport for Wales (TfW) is trying out a later ‘train’ back from across the border tonight.

Hundreds of people from our area are going to watch The Human League, Thompson Twins and a host of other 80’s acts strut their stuff in The Quarry.

And TfW have said that a service will be running back at 11pm, later than the usual last service of 9.43pm. It is believed that this will be a bus service, and possibly just the one coach, but it will be welcome news to those struggling to get taxis.

However, it won’t be such good news for Welshpool’s landlords with a rail insider telling us that this could potentially become a more regular thing in the future.

For now though, an official told us about tonight: “It's a service that isn't being publicly advertised, it’s more of a precaution should anybody turn up. Event planning is undertaken on an event by event basis.”

Most Saturdays, the trains are packed taking drinkers (and thousands of pounds in revenue) away from Newtown and Welshpool into Shrewsbury.

Normally the last train brings a majority back in time for a few drinks in the local pubs, but a later 11pm train, should this become more regular, would definitely make them think twice.
