Montgomeryshire will be hosting one of its biggest ever public meetings tonight (Wednesday) when the county is expected to display a mass display of collective anger.
And the message will be clear that we have simply had enough. First schools closing and then health services moving further afield which were followed by proposed cuts in fire services cover and policing. Montgomeryshire has never had it so bad and just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, somehow a multi-billion pound plan to turn the area into a mass energy hub was slipped in through the back door by the Welsh Assembly Government.
It has enraged the area and galvanised residents like never before and up to 1,000 people are expected to join MP, Glyn Davies, civic leaders as well as TV celebrity Sian Lloyd at tonight’s mass gathering in Welshpool.
“I am so angry that the Welsh Assembly Government has sentenced mid Wales to permanent environmental destruction,” said Mr Davies who said he will open tonight’s meeting with a “fiery” address before handing over to residents.
Weathergirl Sian has also agreed to speak after claiming the plans submitted by National Grid and Scottish Power will turn Montgomeryshire into Britain’s scrap yard.
Meetings have already been held across the area which has recently woken up to the sheer magnitude of the proposals that include a dozen new wind farms, a 20-acre substation and hundreds of pylons carrying cables through the valleys and into England.
Tonight’s meeting will start at 7pm at Welshpool Livestock Sales, but with huge numbers expected to turn out, the advice is to get there early.
