New Memorial Wall work to begin

29/07/2019 @ 11:52

A new memorial wall is to be built in the town’s Memorial Garden in Howell Drive.

Work is expected to start in the coming days on the new wall which will contain the names of local people who have died in the armed forces and the emergency services since 1945.

The names on the wall are for people who were born in Welshpool, lived in Welshpool at the time of their death or have special circumstances such as a strong connection to the town.

The work is expected to take up to four weeks and will also include new paths and flag poles at the location.

The first name to be added to the wall will be Lance Corporal Paul Thomas, from Buttington.

Paul, 29, was killed in Iraq in 2004. Having joined the 2nd Battalion, the Light Infantry, in 1996, he had served in Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Falkland Islands, Kosovo and Sierra Leone. A stone already in his memory will remain in the garden.
