Rural gates are being seen as soft targets for thieves but residents, particularly landowners and walkers, are being asked to look out for a telling sign that it could be next.
‘Spotters’ are apparently carrying out reconnaissance in the area and marking their targets with bailing twine (pictured), so the simple advice is to remove it.
It is believed a follow-up visit is made in pick-ups or vans late at night when the coast is clear to take them.
The warning has come from Shropshire Police as thieves continue to 'scout' both sides of the border.
If you see any suspicious or unusual activity, call the police on 101, or 999 if it is an emergency.
