1940s event achieved its objective

Despite the poor weather, Welshpool’s 1940s Weekend achieved what it set out to do by bringing visitors into the town, according to organisers who are already planning for 2020.

The weather impacted the numbers attending, with several vehicles and traders also staying away, but in typical 1940s spirit to get on with it, the event was hailed as a success.

“Overall it was a success, despite the weather,” said lead organiser, Alan Crowe.

“The evening events and tea dance were well supported and we had visitors from London, Bristol, South Wales, Lancashire, Glasgow, Midlands, Florida, and, at the Sunday night concert, there was a couple from Vancouver in Canada who were holidaying nearby and heard that the concert was on and wanted to make their holiday complete by hearing a Welsh Male Voice choir.

“The event did what it was meant to do by bringing people into the town, staying in local hotels, pubs, guest houses, caravan parks etc. Hospitality businesses providing food and drink did well and other shops said they had an increase in footfall. Plus, hiring the Town Hall and carpark put money into local authorities’ coffers.

“More activities were put on for children and this will be increased further next year.”

But Mr Crowe has called on the community to show more support, saying that the more it puts in, the more it will benefit.

“The success of the event lies with the community as a whole getting involved, jumping on the band wagon and enhancing it. I visit other such events and all the businesses decorate their windows, staff dress up, schools put on dances to raise funds for themselves, pubs put on entertainment and so much more.

“We are a committee of five and can only do so much. People make the effort to come here as I said from all corners of the country and further afield and the town collectively benefits. By getting behind it we will see even greater rewards for the local economy.”

Next year is the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and Mr Crowe said plans are already in place for the September 25-27.
