Fast food giants McDonald’s have confirmed that a new restaurant in Welshpool would create 65 jobs should it open in 2020.

But news that the company has finally gone public on its intention to open a branch on the outskirts of town received a mixed response from our readers.

Initial plans have been submitted this week to Powys County Council for the drive-thru restaurant on Buttington roundabout.

A McDonald’s spokesperson told us this morning: “We are pleased to be progressing with this application, which would create at least 65 jobs and bring significant investment to the area. Our ambition will be to open the restaurant next year.”

While many heralded the move, saying it will save trips to Newtown or elsewhere, others raised concerns that it is only a stone’s throw from the new primary school on Salop Road, and also the fear of increased litter on the bypass.

The application will be considered by the town and county council in the coming weeks.
