Railway group going underground

11/11/2019 @ 10:08

A group which supports the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway will hold its next meeting for its autumn programme on Monday, November 18.

The speaker that night will be Bob Robinson of Llanfair Caereinion, who is a member of the steam railway’s Board of Trustees.

The surprising willingness of 19th century Londoners to travel in the dark, smoke-filled tunnels of the early Metropolitan railway will be one aspect of a talk which will detail the early history of the famous London underground railways, now known as 'The Tube'.

Few passengers today appreciate that the London Underground was a ground-breaking venture in mass transport systems, and Bob will explain how, for good and ill, the present day system still reflects the innovations and limitations of those Victorian engineers and entrepreneurs. Bob has also promised some “unusual and not often found facts and pictures” from the past to present of the tube and of London.

The group's meetings are held in the Council Chamber in Welshpool Town Hall, beginning at 7.30pm. They are open to members and to the wider public. An admission charge of £3 is made and light refreshments are available. This month's talk will follow the group's Annual General Meeting.
