High School Air Ambulance drama

04/05/2011 @ 01:43

There was drama in Welshpool on Sunday when a seriously ill 81 year-old man was prevented from reaching the air ambulance by what one eye witness described as “silly” fencing.

Mywelshpool was contacted by the angry resident who lives close to Gungrog Hill who said an air ambulance had been summoned to help the man who had fallen ill on the Heol Powis estate.

But he claims that after the helicopter had landed on the high school playing fields, the school’s fencing prevented medics from getting the man on board.

“The house is a matter of metres away from the chopper but because of the silly fencing it was impossible for them to reach him,” he said: “The poor man had to get to hospital by road which probably took twice as long. It really upset us because he was very sick. The fences are there I presume to stop dogs fouling on the field but they put a life at risk. I was disgusted.”

Mywelshpool followed up the incident and can confirm that the helicopter left empty 30 minutes after first landing at 5.45pm. Instead, the man was transferred by road and reached the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital at 6.39pm, nearly 80 minutes after the original call was made at 5.20pm.
