Mass community tree-planting at Maesydre

25/11/2019 @ 07:18

Welshpool residents could be one-in-a-million this Saturday as part of a national day of action for the local environment.

As we previously reported, the Woodland Trust has donated 750 young trees to Welshpool as part of their National Tree week mission to plant one million trees across the UK by December 1.

Welshpool’s day of action will be on Saturday with the first stage to plant small trees around Maesydre recreation fields.

“This is an excellent opportunity for residents to join in,” said a Welshpool Town Council spokesperson. “Our community activity day is November 30 from 10.30am-3.30pm. You don’t need to join us for the whole day. You can come along, plant ‘your’ tree, and leave if you wish, or stay and join for as long as you can spare.

“To join in you will need to wear suitable footwear and clothing, and bring your own spade if possible, although we will have spares with us. Of course, we’ll be very pleased to help young people under 12 plant their trees but ask that they are accompanied by an adult.”

Following on from this planting, Welshpool Town Council will be consulting all residents after Christmas to plan further action days.

“As we all know the wider pavements and changes to the traffic system have opened opportunities for planting in the town. We’re also spreading wildflower seed shortly. Our aim is to create ‘pollinator plots’ wherever appropriate, so look carefully at the green spaces near you, we’ll be asking for your views and help on the next planting in the Spring.”

Welshpool Town Council said it is meeting its obligations under the Environment Act (Wales) and the Wellbeing Of Future Generations Act (Wales) by supporting this initiative.
