A MyWelshpool reader’s dash cam footage has resulted in a suspended prison sentence being handed down to a biker.

The footage shows Paul Mason, from Cannock, overtaking vehicles on double white lines along a road near Trewern which has claimed the lives of bikers and motorists over the years.

Mason was guilty of dangerous driving at Welshpool Magistrates Court and received a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was disqualified for 12 months and handed a £755 fine for his display of driving recorded on April 21 at 2.35pm.

“I have seen many bikers overtaking dangerously but never had it on dash cam before,” said our reader, who asked not to be named.

“It happened on the A458 Shrewsbury-Welshpool road at the bottom of Garreg Bank to Trewern Estate.”

The full footage, from which this still is taken, has been viewed more than 6,500 times on the Twitter account belonging to Sgt 101 Ian Price, who is the Go Safe Casualty Reduction Lead for Dyfed Powys Police.

Bizarrely, several people, mostly bikers, defend the biker, calling the sentence “harsh”, but Sgt Price responded: “This is just a snapshot. The riding is a persistent disregard to the safety of himself and others, passing junctions etc where cars could emerge from or even turn right. Let it be a lesson to those who pose a real risk of harm to others.”
