Controversial plans to build a Super Dairy next to Leighton Primary School have divided Welshpool Town Council, but it has been supported by the narrowest of margins.
Farmer Fraser Jones has submitted a plan to create a 1,000-cow milk farm, but villagers have opposed the plan due to environmental and other concerns.
However, the Town Council’s Planning and Development Committee voted in favour of the development 5-4 after hearing representations from both sides of the debate.
A spokesman said: “After extensive debate, the Committee voted narrowly to support the proposals on the basis that farming should be allowed to move forward within the rural economy.”
The plans, which were initially withdrawn following public outrage but then re-submitted with amendments, are with Powys County Council and a decision will be announced soon.
