Lembit calls for Lib Dem action

Former Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik has warned his party to stand up on its own two feet or face more humiliation at the polls.

The Liberal Democrats took a national bashing at the polls last Thursday and, locally, the Conservatives completed their eviction of the party by taking the Assembly Goverment seat.

But Mr Opik has come out fighting and believes the Lib Dems should “brand themselves differently” to the Tories despite holding hands with them in the coalition government.

“It is time for the Liberal Democrats to concentrate on Liberal Democrat policies and brand ourselves in a different way to the Tories,” Mr Opik told Matthew Banister on Radio Two. “We need to look and sound like Liberal Democrates once again so that voters can see a distinct difference from the Tories.”

Mr Opik was ousted in sensational fashion last year when Glyn Davies became only the second Conservative representative for Montgomeryshire in a century.
