DNA snares diesel thief

12/05/2011 @ 01:31

Police have arrested and charged a man after forensic tests showed he had stolen red diesel from a farm near Llanfyllin.

It is a huge breakthrough for Welshpool Police who have been investigating a growing number of diesel thefts and follows the arrest of a man last week in connection with a spate of manhole cover thefts.

The police made their breakthrough from DNA found at the scene of the theft in March, when 110 gallons of red diesel was stolen from the farm. It led them to a habitual offender in his 20’s from the Wrexham area who was arrested last week and admitted the admitted the offence but will challenge the amounts he is charged with stealing in court.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said: ‘This was an excellent piece of police work whereby the officer has carried out a detailed examination of the crime scene and has submitted forensic items to the laboratory. This should send a message to the travelling criminals that we will explore all avenues when dealing with crimes.”
