Covid-19 tragically strikes at Welshpool care home

19/04/2020 @ 02:43

Covid-19 has made a devastating entry into Welshpool with several deaths confirmed at The Rhallt Care Home.

The town has felt relatively immune to the killer virus with just 121 positive cases recorded for Powys as a whole since the first confirmed case on March 11.

But this afternoon, Barchester Healthcare confirmed our worst fears and has urged for the town to refrain from speculation and to respect the privacy of residents and staff at this tragic time.

A spokesperson for Barchester Healthcare, who manage the 82-bedroomed Salop Road facility, issued the following statement to MyWelshpool.

“We can confirm that we have had individuals confirmed with Covid-19, and tragically some of those have sadly passed away. Every one of these deaths is a tragedy for all of us, and we send our heartfelt condolences to our residents, their families and our staff that have suffered.

“The home is in regular contact with Public Health Wales and the local authority. The safety and wellbeing of our residents and our staff is our utmost priority and we are closely following the official advice. We respect the privacy of our residents and staff in all matters and can therefore make no further comment at this stage.”

A joint statement from Powys County Council and Powys Teaching Health Board added:

“The Rhallt Care Home in Welshpool has informed us that sadly some of their residents have died. Our immediate thoughts are with the families who have lost a loved one.

“Powys County Council and Powys Teaching Health Board are working closely with The Rhallt to ensure that residents and staff are supported at this difficult time.

“We ask everyone to respect the dignity and confidentiality of all concerned.”

Welshpool was thrust into the frontline fight against Covid-19 last week when the town’s hospital was named as one of just three in the county that would be dealing with the most seriously ill patients.

This afternoon’s tragic news further reiterates the health professionals’ clear message to stay at home and save lives.
