Sports clubs put on theft alert

23/04/2020 @ 11:42

The local cricket season was supposed to start this week, instead clubs are being warned to be on their guard following a number of thefts across the border.

Welshpool, Montgomery, Guilsfield, Newtown and Llanidloes were all due to start their Shropshire campaigns, but the league has sent out an urgent warning to all clubs offering advice following a spate of thefts.

“Last week we heard of a number of break ins and loss of equipment across the country,” Steve Reese, Clubs and Community Cricket Manager, Shropshire Cricket Board informed club secretaries.

“Overnight we have been advised of the theft of a gang mower also so please remain extra vigilant at these times and it goes without saying if you are offered any “equipment” please let the police know in the first instance.”

Local cricket clubs have been given permission to carry out basic ground maintenance during the Government-enforced restrictions, but many fear that the season could be wiped out, with the optimists hoping that the second half of the season can be played from July.
