Praise for Powys volunteer army

More than 2,000 Powys residents have officially volunteered during the Covid-19 crisis, one of the highest number in Wales, with many more stepping up to do their bit to help their community.

New figures which show that, in total, 2,078 volunteers registered to help and have been used to befriend and check on the welfare of residents, go shopping for those who need it, take patients home from hospital, collect prescriptions and help out in the community kitchens and foodbanks.

According to a new report by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), Cardiff has seen the highest number of residents in Wales sign up at just over 5,000 with Swansea next with almost 2,500 residents registering. Powys was third in the whole of Wales.

Of course, many more of us have been doing this without it being official and local Member of the Welsh Parliament, Russell George has come out in praise.

Mr George said: “These incredible figures show that the people of Powys have stepped up to the plate and showed their generosity of spirit in helping other people in their communities who find themselves in need at this very challenging time.

“It is an incredible response from Powys' residents who have been determined to help where they can and in so doing, have made Powys the third best area in Wales for volunteering. Congratulations to you all and thank you for what you are doing.”
