Work on a £1.6m facelift of sport facilities at Welshpool High School are complete, Powys County Council has said.

The improvement works were part of the council’s 21st Century Schools Programme which will also see the building of two new primary schools in the town – Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School and Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng.

The high school’s all-weather pitch, tennis courts, long-jump pit, tennis nets, changing rooms and toilets have all been refurbished. The works were carried out to compensate the high school for loss of amenities due to construction of the new Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School building.

Work to upgrade the high school’s grassed rugby, football and athletics area are also taking place and are planned for completion this summer.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: “I’m delighted we have been able to upgrade the sport facilities a Welshpool High School, which provides learners with further opportunities to keep fit and active as well as achieve sporting excellence.

“We appreciate the patience and goodwill shown by Welshpool High School while we develop Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School on Salop Road.

“I’m also aware that sport club leaders in Welshpool are exploring options to establish a 4G pitch within the town, which I fully support and, as a council, we will do what we can to support their efforts.”

The council said that facilities will be available to local community groups in the near future.
