Police blast false one-way 'rumours’

24/05/2011 @ 05:57

Welshpool Police Force has taken the unprecedented step of issuing a denial over claims of ticket-happy traffic officers stopping motorists at will on the town’s one-way system.

Reports have been published that over 50 speeding tickets for traffic offences have been issued over the last six weeks, not true according to an angry force.

And local neighbourhood Inspector Diane Davies is worried that the reports will generate alarm and undue concern among motorists and pedestrians in the town.

“As far as I'm aware there have been NO tickets for speeding issued along the new one way system in Welshpool,” said Inspector Davies. “But someone is saying officers have issued 50 speeding tickets. This is untrue.

“But these rumours have triggered some concern so officers have conducted speed checks. Tickets have been issued in relation to failing to comply with the traffic directions but again, these are in single figures. There have been no speeding tickets issued along the new one way road system.

"Dyfed Powys Police are facing competing demands for resources. Spreading unfounded rumour such as this not only unnecessarily increases public anxiety but runs the risks of potentially deviating precious resources away from areas of increased need.”
