'Get a move on'

Welshpool’s one-way system is bracing itself for another acid test this Bank Holiday weekend but faces a nervy build-up with a large chunk of Broad Street still closed off for resurfacing.

And as rain lashed down this lunch time (pictured), planners have sent a clear message as they hope to avoid the traffic jams that ruined many travellers’ Easter.

Work started nine days ago to replace the cobbled stones with tarmac surfacing along the busy main street, with a promise from planners that it would only take three days. But a week on and there appears to be a race against time to finish before the holiday traffic descends on the town.

And there is added concern over the Carnival route which will run through the one-way system on Monday.

“I want them gone by Friday morning,” said a frustrated town clerk, Robert Robinson. “It is taking longer than we were originally told but not finishing before the weekend is not an option. It is a big weekend for the town and we need all roads flowing.”

Monday’s carnival will start from Berriew Street Car Park at 1pm before running round the one-way system before turning into the Maesydre playing fields.
