Garden competition for Council tenants

26/05/2011 @ 03:29

Council tenants across the Welshpool area will be able to showcase their green-fingered talents in a new look garden competition.

Powys County Council has revamped its garden competition for 2011 with a few changes coming into place. This year sees the introduction of a countywide garden competition, with prizes on offer for the best gardens in Powys for:

- Best Kept Garden for households living in general housing
- Best Kept Senior Citizens Garden for households living in designated sheltered housing
- Best Kept Estate for an estate or group of general housing
- Best Kept Senior Citizens Estate for an estate or group of designated sheltered housing.

Prizes for the Best Kept Garden, Best Kept Senior Citizens Garden, Best Kept Senior Citizens Estate in Montgomeryshire is also up for grabs. Tenants can also compete for two new Shire prizes, which are for the Best Vegetable Garden and Best Hanging Baskets or Containers.

Tenants will need to apply to enter the competition for the first time this year.  In previous garden competitions, council tenants were automatically entered into the competition.

Tenants may enter their own garden, estate or even nominate a neighbour’s garden but only if they have their permission.  County councillors and staff from the council’s Housing Services Team will also be able to nominate estates and individual gardens if the tenant has given permission.

Cllr Tony Thomas, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We know that we have lots of tenants who work very hard on their gardens and this year’s competition is designed to give recognition to those people.

“We would like to encourage everyone who works on their garden.  Be it a container or hanging basket, a full blown flower display or even a tasty vegetable garden, we want to receive your entry.”

Judging will take place during June and July and the competition will culminate with presentation ceremonies where winners will be presented with trophies and prizes later on in the year.

Every tenant in Powys has been sent a letter with a form regarding this year’s competition.  If you want to enter the competition then fill in the form and return tomorrow (Friday).
