Delay to car chargers going live

Electric car owners will have to wait another month before they can plug in at Welshpool.

A pair of chargers have been erected in the corner of Church Street and had been expected to go live by now.

But a frustrated Powys County Council confirmed that they have been let down by a contractor.

“There has been a delay, which is due to the electric meter installer,” said a council insider. “New meters were due to be installed in Newtown and Welshpool last Thursday by Western Power but they cancelled the appointment again.

“They are now due to be fitted next month (October 14). We can only carry out the commissioning checks and make the electric charging points live until once the new meters have been installed.”

Last month we revealed that it would cost around £20 to fully charge a car at the new meters.

Powys County Council has received £100,000 from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) to place electric charging points at pay and display car parks all across the county.

In August, the first two locations went live in Llanidloes (pictured), and Machynlleth.
