Covid-19 app ‘can help prevent local lockdown’

Residents in the Welshpool area are being encouraged to help to avoid a local lockdown by downloading the new Covid-19 app for England and Wales.

Just three weeks after a third outbreak recorded 28 cases in the town, the app has been launched nationwide to try and slow the virus spread this winter.

While the app has been met with some caution by some, the member of the Welsh Parliament for Montgomeryshire, Russell George MS, said that if Powys wants to avoid the lockdowns experienced in six south Wales regions, we should all play our part.

“Recent days have been a grim reminder of the threat that coronavirus still poses to Wales, so I'm pleased that the UK and Welsh Governments have worked together to launch the NHS Covid-19 app which will be an important tool for helping to reduce the spread of the virus,” said Mr George.

“If you can, then download it to protect yourselves, your family, and in fact everybody, because we are at a tipping point in our efforts to control the spread of this virus.

“With infection rates rising, we must use every tool at our disposal to prevent transmission, including the latest technology, to protect lives, livelihoods, and the economy.”

The app will alert users if they have been close to someone who later tests positive for Coronavirus, as well as providing risk alerts based on a user’s postcode, allow users to scan QR codes to check in at venues on the app and allow people to book tests, if they have symptoms.

The app can be found and downloaded here.
