CCTV still not fully active

Welshpool’s CCTV system is still not fully operational, mywelshpool can reveal.

One of the cameras is still not keeping a watchful eye over the town centre despite an overhaul of the entire CCTV system which was thought to be running a big brother operation 24 hours a day.

Not so, according to the Town Clerk who confirmed that they are still waiting for the one-way developers to replace a cable so it can be switched on. Yesterday we reported it was the camera on the cross but it has since been confirmed it is actually a camera monitoring a different location.

“Unfortunately during the fine tuning of the one-way system the developers said they needed to dig up the road because the traffic lights cable could not run alongside the CCTV cable,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson.

“This would have caused severe disruption so we agreed to just let them cut the CCTV cable and pull it out from one end. However it means that CCTV camera has not been working since and we are awaiting the developers to re-route the cable over the top of the road instead.”

The new state-of-the-art CCTV system links cameras across the town to a central viewing station which will be monitored by town councillors and town council staff during peak times. They will be undergoing training soon.

The system can archive footage from as far back as three years which can be accessed at the click of a button.
