AM Calls to Change Renewable energy Policy

01/06/2011 @ 02:11

Russell George has called on the new Welsh Government to review its policy on Renewable energy.

The Montgomeryshire AM (pictured), who has been appointed the Shadow Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, has tabled a Notice of Statement of Opinion calling on the Welsh Government to review its Technical Advice Note on Renewable Energy.

Mr George AM explained:

"Statements of Opinion are a bit like tabling Early Day Motions in Parliament and can be tabled by any Assembly Member, other than a Member of the Government on matters affecting Wales. Statements of Opinion may be supported, opposed or subject to comment by any other Assembly Member. Other Assembly members will be able to support this statement of Opinion"

The Notice of Statement of Opinion that Mr George AM tabled read:

This Assembly calls upon the Welsh Government to produce a clear timetable for the promised review of Technical Advice Note (TAN) 8: Renewable Energy (2005); This Assembly asks the Welsh Government to support a moratorium on the construction of all wind farms, excluding microgeneration schemes and projects which have clear community support, in the strategic search areas until the review of TAN 8 is completed. The Welsh Government should ensure that a revised TAN 8 has greater focus on other forms of renewable energies, including solar, marine, small scale biomass, and microgeneration technologies.

Mr George added:

"If it gains support amongst other Assembly Members this will help to facilitate a wider debate in the Assembly chamber."
