Football club targeted by “pathetic individuals”

A football club has been left with a hefty bill to fix a number of seats that were smashed by vandals.

Officials of Berriew Football Club discovered the damage yesterday and said there had already been growing concerns over the rising level of anti-social behaviour happening in the area.

First team manager Dave Jones described it as “very disheartening and disappointing” with the club providing so many opportunities for local youngsters from the age of seven right up to adult football.

“The club and its committee has worked very hard over a number of years to provide very good facilities for the community,” he said. “Once again it will fall on the club and committee to fix the damage and the costs and time that will entail.”

The club said in a statement: “It is with great disappointment that the club has to announce that a number of the seats in the main stand have been damaged and destroyed this week. Sadly we now join a number of other local clubs who have suffered a similar fate.

“The club is aware of an increase in anti-social behaviour at the ground and this criminal damage and wider anti-social behaviour has been reported to Dyfed Powys Police. The police and club’s own committee members will be monitoring more closely.

“If, however, anyone has any information on whichever pathetic individuals were involved in causing this damage, please contact the club or Dyfed Powys Police.”
