Welshpool Hospital was cordoned off by police following a serious assault, believed to have taken place earlier in Newtown, that led to one man needing emergency treatment and another being arrested.

There was a heavy police presence after the man arrived at the hospital just after 2pm, accompanied by a second male. He received emergency treatment for injuries to his body before being taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Police say the incident happened in the Lon Helyg area of Newtown earlier in the day, and a 60-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of serious assault and is in police custody. Police are not looking for anyone else.

“The safety of all at the hospital was the priority, and officers cordoned off the site whilst an investigation commenced,” said a police spokesperson.

“Officers are appealing to anyone who has information in respect of this incident, which occurred in the Lon Helyg area of Newtown initially, to contact them, either online at bit.ly/DPPContactOnline, by emailing 101@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk, or by calling 101.

“If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired text the non-emergency number on 07811 311 908. Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555111, or visiting crimestoppers-uk.org. Quote reference: DP-20201126-149.”
