Covid-19 vaccinations to start next week in Newtown

Covid-19 vaccinations will begin in Newtown from December 15 and health chiefs have thanked medical staff and volunteers for their work.

Vaccination points opened in Powys at Bronllys with Newtown to follow next week

It comes as coronavirus infections rates spiral in Wales, although the figures have not been as bad in Powys as compared to counties in South Wales.

The news comes as the Covid-19 testing centre in Newtown was also moved to the Gravel car park from the NCTP college car park. This is not the vaccination centre.

"There are a huge number of people who have been involved to get us to this point, most of whom work for the health board," said a Powys Teaching Health Board spokesperson.

"But today we have also seen incredible support from the community with a small army of volunteers helping to ensure that those coming for vaccination know where they are going, what they need to do, and generally helping to ensure that the process of vaccinating hundreds of people each day here in Powys is as smooth as it can possibly be."

Two such volunteers include Gail and Gavin who are just two of the volunteers, organised by PAVO.

Gail said: “We all want to get through this as quickly as possible so that we can return to normal. The more people that can help make that happen, the better.

"I’ve been helping greet people as they arrive and complete their paperwork to make the system as smooth as possible, and entertain people as they wait. Everyone is really positive, they are all over the moon that we are at this point.”

Gavin has been helping ensure people arrive and park in the right place to make sure they can get to the vaccination centre quickly and those still working at the hospital can carry on.

“Everyone has been really friendly, it’s been a real pleasure to be able to help”

A health board spokesperson added: "Bringing the Cover vaccine to the people of Powys is a huge and important task, and the health board is extremely grateful to the support of the many volunteers who have helped out throughout the pandemic."
