Family crisis centre fears another lockdown

While the the NHS is fearing Covid-19 overload should we not go into another lockdown soon, a local charity is fearing the impact that such a lockdown would have on domestic abuse numbers in the Welshpool area.

Earlier this month, we reported how the Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre (MFCC) was facing record demand for its services that provide refuge and outreach support to women, men and their children.

The charity is celebrating its 40th birthday this year and saw the number of referrals fall dramatically during the first national lockdown. However, as the country eased out of lockdown, numbers crept up to the expected level and then spiked in October, almost doubling the figure for the same time last year.

“The prospect of Powys going into another full lockdown is a huge concern to MFCC as, during the most restrictive lockdown periods earlier this year, referrals plummeted,” said Jane Stephens, General Manager.

“The concern is that people experiencing or affected by domestic abuse will not have the opportunity to safely and confidentially reach out for help. Raising awareness of how someone can get the support they need is crucial including how to contact MFCC and what services we can provide.”

Demand for the charity’s services, which have saved and transformed lives, is growing every year. Between 2017-’18 and this year, the number of families needing support increased from 205 to 306 and these figures continue to rise.

MFCC, which has 19 employees, is committed to providing comprehensive services to those experiencing or affected by domestic abuse across North Powys, which covers the old county of Montgomeryshire.

To meet the demand for its services, MFCC desperately needs more money and the charity is turning to businesses and the community for support in its landmark 40th anniversary year.

Any business, organisation or individual wishing to support MFCC is asked to contact the charity on Tel: 01686 629114.

MFCC’s refuges provide emergency accommodation for both men and women, which are safe and supported environments, together with a wide range of outreach services.

Anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse, or is worried about someone, should contact MFCC on Tel: 01686 629114, email: admin@familycrisis.co.uk, or visit the website www.familycrisis.co.uk
