Going after the fly-tippers

22/12/2020 @ 09:27

Powys County Council said it will continue to pursue fly-tippers despite Covid-19 stretching their resources.

The authority has revealed four successful investigations in recent weeks, including one Newtown resident who dumped his unsuspecting girlfriend’s rubbish in a lay-by.

A Churchstoke resident was also fined for dumping bags of rubbish next to the recycling banks in a supermarket carpark. There were further prosecutions in Brecon and Machynlleth.

All four were issued a Fixed Term Penalty (FPN) by Waste Enforcement Officers, who hope that these cases will act as a deterrent for others.

An online fly-tipping hotline has been set up and CCTV is regularly placed at trouble spots to try and catch the offenders.

“Powys County Council already have a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping, but in these unprecedented times, with key workers already going above and beyond to maintain vital services and support our communities, we should not have to allocate additions resources to clear up after the irresponsible few,” said Cllr Heulwen Hulme, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling.

Members of the public are urged to report any incidences of fly-tipping through https://en.powys.gov.uk/article/4073/Report-fly-tipping
