Two town council staff in house that suffered explosion

It has been confirmed that two of the three people in the house that suffered an explosion on Saturday were Welshpool Town Council staff.

Town clerk Anne Wilson confirmed that the property on Woodside belongs to the Burgess Land Trust, a 260-year-old fund that generates income for the upkeep of buildings in the town as part of its mandate.

This morning, gas was officially ruled out as a cause of the explosion which forced adjacent properties to be evacuated.

Ms Wilson also confirmed that the town council employees were not working at the property, but did not say whether they live or were visiting there. The good news, however, is that the two injured were released from hospital on Saturday night but “their wounds need dressing regularly”.

This afternoon, she provided the following statement on behalf of the Trustees of the Burgess Land Trust:

“There was an explosion during Saturday afternoon in a property owned by the Burgess Land Trust in Woodside, Welshpool.

“There were three people in the property at the time, two of whom are staff of the Town Council. Two people received treatment at hospital but neither have life threatening injuries.

“Investigations are still ongoing into the cause of the explosion and at this time we are not able to tell you anymore.

“For clarity the Town Councillors are the Trustees of the Burgess Land Trust as part of their role as a Town Councillor.”
