Staff and residents at the Welshpool care home hit hard during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic have received their first vaccine.

While staff from Barchester's The Rhallt received their vaccine at the vaccination centre in Newtown, residents had their’s administered at the Rhallt by local district nurses.

General manager, Sharon Herbert, said: “We’ve had a year like no other and the vaccine feels like the light at the end of the tunnel. Our teams have been magnificent in how they have risen to every challenge during this pandemic and we are proud to play our part in this next phase to ensure the most vulnerable are protected.

“It will help to keep our residents safe, and is the first step in getting things back to normal and having a buzz of visitors in the home once again.”

Yesterday, Powys Teaching Health Board unveiled ambitious plans to have up to 8,000 people vaccinated a week at the three centres in Newtown, Builth Wells and Brecon, as well as the county’s 16 medical centres expected to come on line by the end of the month.
