Welshpool launched its fightback against Covid-19 today with over 100 people aged 75-79 vaccinated at the Medical Centre.

Despite the weekend snow bringing extra challenges, the centre confirmed that it had been a huge success with those unable to attend quickly replaced so that no vaccine went to waste.

“It’s the first day, but it has gone really well and the patients seem really pleased,” said Dr. Ian Russell. “We’ve got a system set up where people come in and have their vaccines safely. It’s good to have started today but it is going to be a long process over the coming weeks.”

A total of 106 people received their first dose today, with the rest of the 479 people in the age range expected to receive their’s over the coming days.

Dr. Russell said the centre would be doing all it can to get through the age groups as quickly as possible.

“We are being instructed by the local health board, who are in turn being instructed by the Welsh Government. There is a set order for people having their vaccinations. But no-one will be missed and as soon as one group is cleared we will be working our way down to the next one,” he said.

Welshpool has endured three waves of the virus, with a total of 186 people testing positive in the town since the first case back on March 11, 2020.

A total of 16 GP surgeries have signed up to deliver the vaccine in Powys alongside the three main vaccination centres of Newtown, Builth Wells and Brecon.
