Late night safety concerns as taxi office closes

26/04/2021 @ 01:07

A Welshpool taxi firm has accused the Town Council of putting people’s late night safety at risk after being told to leave their premises next to the Tourist Information Centre.

Wright’s Taxi have operated a physical presence from the building for a number of years, providing a safe after-hours location to take shelter in whilst waiting for a taxi home.

But the firm will have to leave after the Town Council decided to relocate its offices there from Triangle House to save money on their annual budget.

The Town Council said that Wright’s were given six months’ notice as per their lease terms, but it has enraged the firm who have issued a plea to find a new base with a parting shot at their former landlords.

“Wright’s Taxi office has been taken away from us by Welshpool Town Council and with no other option, we will be closing our doors for the final time at the end of April,” the firm stated on its Facebook page.

“Wright’s will still be running but, unfortunately, no office means no walk-ins and no sit-and-waits making an awful lot of customers vulnerable late at night, so well done Welshpool Town Council on your appalling decision!

“After trading for over 10 years, our main priority is to keep our customers safe with a secure place to sit and wait without having to do so on the streets, especially late at night.”

The statement goes on to explain that the company is looking for a suitable location close to the town centre.

“If anyone can help in any way, then please don’t hesitate to contact Steve or Helen Wright on 01938-552531.”

This morning, a spokesperson for Welshpool Town Council told us: “Wrights Taxi’s are not being forced to leave their offices. They signed up to a lease with the Town Council which has a six-month break clause terminable by either party with not less than six months’ notice in writing terminating the lease on April 30 each year.

“The Town Council has chosen to exercise that break clause and have given them the six months’ notice required. At one stage the Town Council may have been able to help with a future office for them but restrictive covenants on the building in question have not made this possible.

“The Town Council offices are moving to the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) as a cost saving exercise and plans are already in the process of being drawn up. The TIC is reconfiguring too with options for a click and collect and online services and tables and chairs for refreshments outside.”

There are currently vacancies on the Town Council, with information available on how to stand from anne@welshpooltowncouncil.gov.uk.
