Welshpool to ‘Give’n’Take’ this autumn

22/08/2021 @ 10:16

A community initiative aiming to reduce the huge wastage of excess fruit and vegetables in Welshpool will be launched in September.

Give ’n’ Take has been organised by a group of town councillors to address the issue of the vast amounts of home grown fruit, vegetables, nuts and even eggs that end up in the bin or rotting on the ground.

They hope it will also address the issue of some households struggling to balance their tight weekly budgets by incorporating local nutritious fresh produce into their weekly ‘shop’ for free.

The idea is to have a table of donated produce available outside the Town Hall each Saturday, starting on September 4 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

“We expect this to carry on through the autumn, but how long it continues will depend on what and when people give,” said Carol Robinson, Deputy Mayor.

“All it needs as a bit of give ‘n’ take and we can all have less waste and more people having good local produce; meeting new people and making friends whilst helping to gather produce or spread the word.”

The Town Council has prioritised the reduction of waste in the town, and while many in the town are already sharing produce, it is hoped that this initiative can engage everyone.
