Police nab Ardwyn School arsonists

11/07/2011 @ 06:47

Ardwyn School is set to install CCTV after arsonists set fire to a tree, which could have resulted in a much more serious blaze.

Police have arrested three youths, who can’t be named for legal reasons, following the May Bank Holiday incident that saw fire fighters respond to a 999 call and extinguish the fire before it spread to the school and nearby buildings.

A police spokesperson confirmed: “Through local enquiries, suspects were identified and three local youths were arrested. Two youths have received final warnings, and will now work with Powys Youth Offending Service in an effort to steer them away from crime and anti social behaviour.”

The school governors have approved CCTV which should be installed this summer.

The alarming incident has prompted Welshpool Police to issue another warning to yobs intent on mischief.

“We encourage all residents of the Welshpool and surrounding areas to report all issues to us that they believe affect their quality of life,” said the spokesperson.  “This may range from anti social behaviour, crime issues, drugs misuse and alcohol issues. We will endeavour to deal with these issues positively with our partner agencies to improve the quality of life for our residents.”

All issues can be reported on the non-emergency number of 101 or via e-mail at welshpooltownnpt@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk. If you have information but do not want to give your name you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
