Fancy a job playing billiards?

Not even Ronnie O’Sullivan has the chance to show off his skills to 100,000 people, but one lucky cueist could be doing just that in Welshpool!

Powis Castle is looking for a volunteer after deciding to open up the castle’s Billiard Room to visitors, and it has created one of the more unusual job vacancies.

The National Trust, which manages the 800-year old tourist attraction, needs a billiard room host, and the lucky person doesn’t even have to be particularly good at the sport.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for someone to bring the billiard room to life, and involve visitors in a game enjoyed by the aristocracy for generations,” said House Steward William Brown. “But you don’t have to have Ronnie O’Sullivan’s ability with a cue, just an understanding of the game and an enthusiasm for meeting people.”

The Castle attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year and is also looking for a volunteer castle room guide.

Alison Dyer of the National Trust said: “This is a great opportunity for anyone who’s a real people person. You don’t need to be an expert or an academic to be a room guide, what’s important is plenty of personality, and the emphasis is always on the welcome. We’re also looking for someone with a real passion for books to help in our bookshop.”

To keep every room of the castle open for visitors the National Trust needs 18 volunteers a day, and as the property aims to open more days a year, the number required is growing.

If you have the necessary skill at the billiard table or just a way with people and want to find out more about volunteering with the National Trust contact Powis Castle on 01938 551920.
