This weekend’s Country & Western Festival at Welshpool promises to be the biggest in the 24 year history of the event, which gets underway today (Friday).

Organisers have extended the event from two to three days and have pre-bookings for the first time with 165 caravans already booked onto the showfield at Powis Castle.

And with a new promotions company in place there will be a star-studded line up of top country acts to entertain the crowds including one of the biggest names in country music Texas Tornados plus the legendary kings of country festivals Henry Smith Band.

There will also be appearances from The Western Line, Campbell’s Country and C’est La Vie alongside many other performers.

New this year is a Friday night talent show with the winner getting the chance to perform on Sunday and competitions for the best dressed couple and family.

Trips on the Heulwen Trust canal boats will be available on Friday and Saturday and shuttle coaches will be running from the Berriew Street Car Park to the festival between 11am and 5pm on Saturday and 10am and 7pm on Sunday.

Caravans were already arriving at the show site today on Thursday and organisers were keeping their fingers crossed for fine weather.

“This is promising to be the biggest country and western festival that Welshpool has seen,” said Dennis Duggan, one of the organisers. “We are hoping fine weather as it can make a huge difference to the event if the weather is unkind.

“We’ve been taking on-line advance bookings for the first time and it has proved very successful with well over 300 people already securing tickets.”
