The kids are alright!

The local youth gets its fair share of criticism and bad press and let’s face it, news organisations like mywelshpool rarely receive a good news story to give them a break.

But four young lads from Forden are determined to put that right by demonstrating that there is plenty of community spirit amidst the up and coming generation.

The three 15 year-olds and a 14 year-old have teamed up to put on a community event this Saturday in Forden, which they herald as being ‘run by young people, for young people’ and they are encouraging the wider community of the Welshpool area to come and support them.

Tom Francis, one of the organising quartet, explained what it’s all about.

“There isn't a lot to do in Forden, so we have decided to resurrect the Fun Day and we’re hoping it will become an annual event with the support of the community once again.

“The Fun Day used to be an event we’d all look forward to. Many children and adults enjoyed it and I have fond memories as a former student at Forden Church in Wales Primary School.”

Tom, 15, is joined by Will Gittins, 15, Chris Windsor, 15, and Connor Phillips, 14, who are all students at Welshpool High School.

“We thought it would be good to put something back into the community,” explained Tom. “This is because, stereotypically, teenagers in the area are sometimes given a bad name.”

The boys have created a day of activities for the village to remember and for the whole family to enjoy. There will also be live music performed by two Welshpool High School students, 'Huw and Will' who have released a single on iTunes.

Tom added: “This event is run by young people, for young people, and is putting the fun back into Forden.”

The local community has come out in support too by supplying raffle prizes and support. The day gets underway at 2.30pm and the entry fee of £3 for adults and £1.50 for children will include a free burger and a drink. All proceeds will go to Forden School.
