Big brother set to get bigger!

Welshpool is set to enter a fresh era of CCTV surveillance which could extend beyond the town centre.

Six volunteers have been trained up to monitor the town’s upgraded CCTV system and will begin their shifts in the coming weeks to watch over the town at key times of the week. But the cameras will be working 24 hours a day to aid police in investigations into crimes committed.

And it has now been confirmed that the network is set to be extended, with town councillors already approving the erection of at least one camera overlooking Maesydre recreation area and another for the entrance of the Oldford estate to be considered at full council later this month.

“There have been a lot of problems with vandalism at Maesydre again this summer and the council has decided to act by extending the CCTV coverage,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “Some residents of Oldford have also stated they would like CCTV at the entrance of the estate so this will be also considered by councillors.”

Welshpool Town Council took over the ownership and management of the CCTV system earlier this year and is currently looking to relocate the control room into its premises from the Royal Oak.

Although unconfirmed, it is believed the town’s ‘big brother’ was used in the massive police operation to smash the town’s heroin ring last month.
