Scottish woman ‘humiliated’ in Welshpool

26/08/2011 @ 12:12

A Scottish tourist who said she was so angered by her treatment in a Welshpool supermarket has complained to a national newspaper.

Yvonne Russell said she was “humiliated” after handing a Scottish £20 note to a check out assistant in Morrisons following a stop-off during her long journey home from holiday in south-west Wales to Larkhall, near Glasgow.

And it upset her so much, she wrote a letter of complaint to The Herald, Scotland’s leading daily, which has been read by mywelshpool.

In it she shared her experience by writing:

“Returning from a family holiday in south-west Wales last weekend, we had to stop at Morrisons supermarket in Welshpool to replenish chocolate supplies for our diabetic son.

“Welshpool is a town which lies just on the border of England and Wales, on the Welsh side. I proffered a £20 note to the assistant at the till, and was humiliated as she held it up, turned it over, looked me up and down, examined the note again, and then in front of a large queue of customers stated that she was looking to see where it said sterling on the note as she wasn’t sure if it was legal.”

She went on to say that she had not encountered a problem using Scottish notes south of the border for a long time and asked: “why is this issue rearing its head once again?”

We forwarded the letter to Morrisons HQ but to date we have not received a reply.
