Polish shop to open in Welshpool

29/09/2011 @ 04:41

Welshpool is set to open its first Polish shop, but residents and businesses in Puzzle Square are set to oppose its application for an alcohol licence.

The store will open in the old Graham’s Fabrics shop in the square and cater for the town’s large Eastern European sector which has increased the local population by up to 1,500 over the last few years.

And while the shop has been welcomed by fellow businesses and residents who were worried that Puzzle Square was becoming a forgotten zone, concerns have been raised about the length of time that the shop wishes to sell alcohol.

One resident explained: “We have a lot of problems here with people hanging around and getting drunk so there is a big concern that another shop selling booze will just increase the problems. It is not a major problem that they are selling alcohol, just the fact that they are applying to sell it from 8am-11pm every day.”

The application will be decided by Powys County Council.
