Campaign secures safer crossing

21/10/2011 @ 02:17

A dangerous crossing in Churchstoke has been made safer, thanks to the efforts of a local campaign demanding change.

Local driving instructor Rob Harper said he felt he had to act after receiving complaints from local residents who claimed they were ‘dicing with death’ in crossing the busy A489 with several near misses reported on the hazardous zebra crossing.

Rob, who is also an active campaigner for the Liberal Democrats, had visited several homes in Churchstoke during a campaign and took up the issue with Powys County Council.

The problem has now been resolved with a strip of flashing LED strips around the edge of the Belisha beacons to make oncoming drivers aware of the crossing.

He said: "I received a number of complaints from residents living adjacent to the pedestrian crossing. It was clear that one of the problems was that oncoming vehicles could not see the flashing beacons, especially in direct sunshine.

“Powys County Council has now fixed the problem by fitting LED lights around the top of the beacon. This has made the crossing more visible to oncoming vehicles. I applaud the county council officials who have rectified this serious road safety issue and congratulate them on doing so in a timely manner.”
