Welshpool butcher John Langford has been fined £2,500 and told to pay £1,150 costs for preparing food for Oswestry Show in unapproved premises.

Welshpool Magistrates heard that Environmental Health Officers from Powys County Council found Mr Langford using a food premises for the production of cooked beef that had not been approved by the Council.

The businessman admitted to cooking beef joints in unapproved premises in Berriew in August last year. The meat was being supplied to Oswestry Show for public consumption.

Welcoming the verdict, Councillor Geraint Hopkins, Cabinet Member for public protection said: “This case highlights the requirements on Food Business Operators to register their food businesses with the Council, or where necessary apply for approval.

“Approval is only granted to food manufacturing establishments when Food Business Operators can demonstrate that all risks are controlled and that strict requirements have been met. Operating a food business without approval could potentially present a significant risk to health.

“This particular case sends out a stark warning to all Food Business Operators of the penalty they may face if they intend to operate food premises without approval.”
